New Register Announced!
PSI Certification of Psychometric Test Use for Guidance Counsellors

The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) is delighted to announce the availability of the Register of Psychometric Test Use: Guidance Counsellors. The new Register has been made possible with the PSI, the Directors of Studies in Guidance Counselling courses, the Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) and the Adult Educational Guidance Association of Ireland (AEGAI) all coming to a mutual arrangement in relation to the Certification of Psychometric Test Use for Guidance Counsellors.

Guidance counsellors interested in joining the PSI Register can access the application form from the PSI website, www.psychologicalsociety.ie, and can contact the IGC or AEGAI for more information.

The National Centre for Guidance in Education (NCGE) is supportive of the PSI Register, which will support the implementation of good practice in the use of psychometric testing in the education sector. The Register endorses the professional competence of the guidance counsellor in the administration of psychometric tests and serves the public interest as an Irish register.

  • Guidance counsellors who have completed a Department of Education and Skills (DES) recognised initial education programme in guidance counselling1 from 1999 are eligible to join the Register.

  • Guidance counsellors who qualified prior to 1999 and who have undertaken Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in psychometric testing since qualification are also eligible to join the Register. This CPD includes guidance counsellors who have acquired BPS Level A certification.

  • Guidance counsellors who hold guidance qualifications from outside of the State can join the Register on condition that the DES has approved their qualification for working in the education sector.
