Psychological Society of Ireland reiterates support for the Assistant Psychologist position within the HSE pay scale

The PSI is aware that a level of dissatisfaction exists among Early Career Psychologists (ECPs) on the position of the Assistant Psychologist role and the issues of recognition and level of remuneration. Last year the PSI came out in support for the establishment of an AP grade within the HSE pay scale. One year on, the PSI still supports this endeavour. The Society notes that some progress has been made with the HSE negotiations to set up such a grade at the Executive Officer level. No definite timeline has been confirmed but our understanding is that this will be established in the near future.

We take this issue very seriously and we continue to be committed to improving the professional working conditions of the ECPs. Through our policy document on Guidelines for the Employment of Assistant Psychologists in Ireland, we have provided guidance for graduates on such posts and on how those who employ psychologists should use them.

We will be raising the matter again at our Council meeting in early April and will be seeking further clarification from the HSE on progress.
