Date: Saturday 2nd September
Time: 10-4pm

Fee: €50 (€40 early bird bookings made before 30/07/2017; €30 students)

Emotion Focused Therapy is an empirically-supported humanistic treatment that follows in the tradition of Person-Centered and Gestalt psychotherapy, whilst also drawing on contemporary findings from affective neuroscience and research into emotional transformation processes in therapy. There is increasing empirical support for the idea that emotion at its core is an innate and adaptive system that has evolved to help us survive and thrive. EFT seeks to activate this innate, adaptive potential in order to help clients transform problematic, painful or stuck emotional states. Recent years have seen an increase in the popularity of EFT, as well as growing research support for its efficacy with a wide variety of problems (including depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, eating disorders and anxiety). Training in EFT is open to qualified psychologists and psychotherapists and typically involves up to 12 training days supplemented by supervision and the submission of case studies.

Workshop:
This workshop is aimed at practitioners who may be interested in pursuing EFT training in the future but wish first to learn more about the approach. The workshop will give an overview of EFT theory and practice, covering such topics as differentiating between primary, secondary and instrumental emotion; maladaptive emotional processes and the relationship between these processes and psychological disorders; assessing client emotion processing styles; case conceptualisation; the role of the therapeutic relationship in EFT; working with emotional avoidance and emotional dysregulation; key EFT tasks and interventions (such as Two Chair Dialogues for working with conflict splits); and transforming core emotional pain in therapy through the activation of adaptive emotional processes. The workshop will consist of lectures supported by case examples and video demonstrations. It will not involve experiential exercises.

Please note this is an introduction to EFT theory and practice; it does not constitute training in psychotherapy or EFT.

Facilitator: Dr. Timulak is an Associate Professor at Trinity College Dublin, where he is Course Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. He trained in EFT with Professors Leslie Greenberg and Robert Elliott. He is the principle investigator in a HRB funded study investigating the application of EFT to the treatment of Generalised Anxiety Disorder and is the author of several books including two books on EFT: 'Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy' (Routledge, 2015) and the forthcoming 'Transforming Generalized Anxiety' (Routledge).

This event is being registered for CPD credits for members of PSI.
Early bird rate applies when full fee is paid before 30/07/2017. No refund will be given without one week’s notice
