The phases of treatment will be described and the specific processes that led to the resolution of the clients’ presentation will be highlighted and illustrated

  • Participants will be taught how to help clients identify which of their emotions they can trust and rely on as adaptive guides and which of their emotions are residues of painful memories that have become maladaptive to the person's current context and need therefore to be changed.

  • Participants will be taught empirically-based therapeutic interventions designed to help clients accept, express, regulate, make sense of, and transform emotion.

Workshop Content:
Rhonda N. Goldman, PhD, will lead a 4 day introductory and experiential workshop on Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) as a treatment for working with complex emotions in individual psychotherapy. EFT is a unique empirically-based approach, based on methods designed to help people accept, express, regulate, make sense of and transform emotion. Recent years have seen a growth of EFT in both individual and couples therapy, both because of its status as an evidence-based treatment, and also because the EFT approach focuses on the development of emotional intelligence and on the importance of secure relationships. Based on emotion, attachment, and growth theory, EFT helps people identify which of their emotions they can trust and rely on as adaptive guides and which of their emotions are residues of painful memories that have become maladaptive to the person's current context and need to be changed. With the help of the therapist's empathic understanding and the use of experiential methods, clients learn how to make healthy contact with feelings, memories, thoughts, and physical sensations that have been ignored or feared and avoided. The approach will be illustrated with video recorded case studies. The phases of treatment will be described and the specific processes that led to the resolution of the clients’ presentation will be highlighted and illustrated
